Online Dating Practices Change the Face of Romance

From VOA News -- "Increasingly, in the United States and around the world, the Internet and so-called "speed dating" are considered legitimate and efficient ways to find a mate, or at least a date.

On a Wednesday night at home in her one-bedroom apartment in Washington, Ashley Smith, 25, surfs the Internet, looking for "Mr. Right".

With her outgoing personality and southern charm, Ashley seems like the type of girl who would have no problem finding a date. But she says looking for a date online allows her to select the type of person she wants to go out with.

"I can say that I want someone who is 6' 2" (one-meter-88), makes between $75,000 and $100,000 a year, is a Protestant Christian, who attends church either on the holidays or regularly or once a week, who does not smoke, who drinks one or two drinks socially, who is looking for someone with short hair who is fun and outgoing," Ashley said. "I mean, I can specify exactly what I want. It's dial-a-date!"

Internet market research firm ComScore Media Metrix says each month, roughly 23 million people in the U.S. use the Internet to find a date. Web sites such as Yahoo! Personals and Match.com are leading the pack. Match.com has 15 million members in 240 countries and local country sites in 18 different languages."

Study: Man's Face Determines Dating Potential

From CBS5.com -- "Women looking for a long-term relationship like men who like children -- and they can tell which guys might be interested in becoming fathers just by looking at their faces.

Those are among the findings of a study of college students published Wednesday in a British scientific journal.

"This study suggests that women are picking up on facial cues that are perhaps related to paternal qualities," said James Roney, a University of California at Santa Barbara psychologist and lead author of the study. "The more they perceived the men as liking kids, the more likely they could see having a longer-term relationship."

Experts said evolution has apparently programmed women to recognize men who might be interested in propagating the species by raising a family."

Singer's Online Dating Enlivens Her Normal Life

From BostonHerald.com -- "Mecca Normal’s frontwoman, Jean Smith, has been called an alt-rock trailblazer, a feminist role model, even a bit of a sex symbol. In other words, she’s about the last person you’d expect to run into on an Internet dating site.

But punk icons apparently get lonely, too. Smith’s online search for a romantic partner is the subject of Mecca Normal’s striking new disc, ‘‘The Observer.” With musical partner David Lester providing guitar soundscapes and hints of pop melody (the duo has no rhythm section), Smith’s half-sung, half-spoken stories are full of barbed humor and revealing details. One song describes an uncomfortable night with a guy who seemed a little too keen on her; another tells of a first date with a middle-aged ski bum weirded out by her punk-rock connections.

Reached during a tour stop last week, Vancouver native Smith said writing about her experiences - for a forthcoming book as well as the album - made the bad dates more bearable."
